If you missed the Orpheum Theatre tour a year and-a-half ago, there's another chance coming up to see the grandeur of the 1912 building standing alone on the west side of Route 18 in New Bedford's south end. The 1200-seat theater and Sharpshooter's Hall will be opened for a quick look on June 28 by ORPH Inc, a non-profit organization with the mission to acquire and restore the building. "Phantoms of The Orpeum" is a one-time event.

This Sunday afternoon event will feature ghosts of the Orpheum. Tours will be led by Orpheum Risng Project Helpers and volunteers speaking about the history and architecture of the theatre. Throughout the building costumed actors will be portraying significant characters of the theater’s history. Rope lights will be used to illuminate stairwells and common access areas of the building.

Le Club des Francs-Tireurs, a local benevolent association built and operated the building, with a lease to the Orpheum circuit, from its opening April 15, 1912 through 1960 when Orpheum Theatre closed. ORPH Inc. is an all-volunteer organization with the mission to preserve, protect, restore, and adapt this architectural and cultural treasure in New Bedford. When restoration is complete, performances, classes, and activities will help revitalize the south end.

Local non-profit groups have been invited to participate in front of the theater during Phantoms of the Orpheum. Historical mementos and photos will be displayed. ORPH invites anyone to bring their souvenirs, keepsakes, and stories, to show, and tell. President Charles Hauck stated "Our goal is to celebrate how Orpheum Theatre and Sharpshooter’s Hall played a vital part in New Bedford's extra ordinary history".

To support the project a suggested donation of ten dollars is requested for the Sunday afternoon tour. United Way of Greater New Bedford Community Building Mini-Grants Program is co-sponsor of Phantoms of the Orpheum.
