The Orpheum Plaza District Design Collaborative presents exciting proposals for improvements to Route 18 and the Orpheum Theater. See how artists and designers envision this South End neighborhood revitalized with new buildings, pedestrian friendly streets, and a plaza crossing Route 18! Elements of the proposal include: new trees and plantings, a stoplight at Gifford Street, fountains, alleviation of traffic at Cove Street, a plaza for community events, opportunities for public art, all creating a gateway to the South End.
This slideshow represents a look at what the proposed Orpheum Plaza would look like. Chuck Hauck sculpted and painted the models. Ricardo Santos and Jose Guzman were the architects. The plaza would be incorporated into the existing highway, but would allow for better traffic flow and increased pedestrian access and safety, all the while showcasing the South End of New Bedford.
