The French Sharpshooters began in the city's north end as a French benevolent society. This organization would be called upon to help New Bedford's French Canadian community in times of need, as well as organizing social events.
The organization grew and constructed the French Sharpshooters Hall on South Water street to hold events, dances, socials, drills and shooting tournaments. Le Club des Francs-Tireurs was instrumental in raising and training recruits for both World Wars.
The organization also formed marching bands that competed regionally.
The Orpheum Theatre was leased from the Sharpshooter’s to the Orpheum Circuit of Boston. The club ultimately disbanded in 1968 due to poor membership.
